Crisis & Safety Policy
Last updated: 2026-08-08
If you or someone else is in immediate danger, do not wait for Murmur. Call your local emergency number now - for example 112 in Türkiye and across the EU, 911 in the United States - or go to your nearest emergency department. Crisis services for your country are in the app under Settings → Safety, and worldwide directories are at findahelpline.com and befrienders.org.
What Murmur is - and is not
Murmur is a space for daily self-reflection: a reading from your birth chart, written reflection, and conversation with an AI companion. People often turn to reflection in difficult moments, and we take the responsibility that comes with that seriously. This policy explains what Murmur does - and, just as importantly, what it cannot do - when a conversation suggests that you may be at risk of harm. Murmur is operated by Vits Consulting UG (haftungsbeschränkt), Meisenstrasse 6, 40789 Monheim am Rhein, Germany ("we", "us").
Murmur is a wellbeing and reflection product. It is not a medical device, a healthcare service, an emergency service, or a crisis hotline, and it is not a substitute for professional mental-health care. When you chat in Murmur, you are talking to an AI, not a human. The AI is not a therapist, counsellor, or clinician; it cannot diagnose or treat, and your conversations are not monitored by people. Please do not rely on Murmur as your only source of help in a crisis.
How Murmur recognises a possible crisis
When you exchange messages with the AI companion, an automated safety check runs alongside the conversation. It looks for signals that may indicate a safety concern - for example content suggesting suicidal thoughts or self-harm, serious harm or abuse directed at you by someone else, or acute emotional distress.
This check applies only to the messages you exchange with the AI companion. The reflections and readings you keep in Murmur are stored on your device and are not scanned.
Automated detection is not perfect. It can miss genuine risk, and it can trigger on content that is not a crisis - for example when you describe a dream, a memory, or something that happened to someone else. We tune our systems to err on the side of offering help, but no automated system can guarantee that any particular message will be recognised.
What happens when the safety check triggers
Two things - and only these two things:
- The conversation stays open. The AI will acknowledge what you have shared and respond with care. Murmur will never block you, end the conversation, or penalise your account because you talked about how you feel. A moment of distress is the worst possible time to be shown a closed door.
- The app shows you real help. Murmur will display crisis services appropriate to your region - hotlines and text services staffed by trained people, independent of Murmur - so that human support is one tap away. These services are also always available, without any trigger, under Settings → Safety.
What Murmur cannot do - please read this
No one at Murmur monitors conversations, and our systems cannot dispatch help. Murmur cannot call emergency services, notify your family, or alert the authorities on your behalf - even when the safety check triggers. If you are in danger, or worried about someone else, contacting your local emergency number yourself is always the fastest and most reliable route to help. That is exactly why we put those numbers one tap away.
Your data
The safety check is fully automated and runs in the moment, on the message you send, as part of generating the AI’s reply. We do not build a profile of your mental health, we do not keep safety-check results linked to your account, and no conversation content is sent to a person for review. Where the law requires us to report how often crisis resources were shown - for example under California law - we report aggregate counts only, containing no personal information.
Details of how Murmur processes personal data are in our Privacy Policy.
